Discovering the Victorian Charm of Saltburn-by-the-Sea
Nestled along the stunning Yorkshire coastline, Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a hidden gem that perfectly encapsulates the charm of a bygone era. With its Victorian architecture, breathtaking cliffs, and expansive beach, it offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of more commercialized seaside resorts. If you and your furry friend are seeking a relaxing getaway to the seaside Saltburn-by-the-sea needs to go on your list!
A Glimpse into Victorian Elegance
As you wander through Saltburn, you’ll be captivated by the town’s Victorian charm. The grand architecture, with its ornate facades and charming terraces, transports you back in time. Stroll along the pier, which dates back to the late 19th century, and take in the stunning views of the North Sea. The nearby Saltburn cliff tram, the oldest water balanced funicular in the country, adds to the historical allure and provides a fun way to ascend the steep cliffs while soaking in panoramic vistas. You’ll be pleased to know dogs are allowed on, but if you’ve your heart set on riding it I suggest checking the website for operating times.

Less Commercial, More Character
One of the most appealing aspects of Saltburn is its relatively uncommercialized nature compared to nearby destinations like Whitby or Scarborough. Here, you won’t find an overload of flashy attractions; instead, you’ll discover quaint shops, local eateries, and a warm community vibe. The emphasis is on enjoying the natural beauty and tranquillity of the area, making it an ideal spot for those looking to unwind. Down on the beach the colourful beach huts are a quaint pop of colour and make for some lovely photography backdrops.

Surfs up!
As well as day trippers, dog walkers, Saltburn has a vibrant surf scene attracting a youthful, cool crowd, which for me just adds to the charm and interest of the place. Perhaps we’ll get Lola a life jacket one day and give it a go. On second thoughts, probably not.
If dogs could design a beach!
For dog owners, Saltburn’s beach is a true paradise. The vast stretch of golden sand invites you and your four-legged friend to explore several kilometres worth of tail wagging, sandy shoreline. The whole beach is dog-friendly for part of the year, allowing you to enjoy long walks and fun in the surf together. However, be mindful of the seasonal restrictions: dogs are not allowed on a small, designated stretch of the beach (near the pier) from May to September, ensuring that families can enjoy the sandy shores without being licked to death by our puppas during the peak summer months. Fair enough if you ask me. It’s also worth noting the tide times before you travel. When the tide’s out doggos have acres of glorious beach to explore but, if you arrive at high tide, it’s a little less spacious.

Parking and Accessibility
Currently, there is free parking available up in town and along the headland that overlooks the coastline, but be mindful there’s 173 steps to tramp down to get to the beach – a real thigh burner at the end of a long walk and where the cliff tram seems like a god send! There is a pay-and-display carpark down by the sea, but get there early to avoid waiting around for a space, especially in the summer months!
Dog friendly Restaurants and Accommodation
We love nothing more than a great hearty meal (and cheeky beer) to recharge, after a long stroll and personally we can recommend 23 Milton Street - if you love a great tasting sourdough pizza!
